Epoxy resin is a two component thermosetting liquid polymer *: a base resin and a hardener.

Epoxy resin is a polymer* thermosetting liquid** two-component: a base resin and a hardener (the most used is probably the cycloaliphatic amine). The base resin is usually clear in color, while the hardener is amber in color. It is also possible to incorporate various diluents (reagents or not), plasticizers, fillers, solvents, additives, etc. in order to obtain a complete solution range. This type of material has excellent mechanical properties, good temperature resistance, acceptable chemical resistance and low shrinkage on drying.

* Polymers are a class of materials. From a chemical point of view, a polymer is a macromolecule. The most known polymers are natural fibers (wood, paper, natural textiles ...), plastics, natural rubbers, glues, paints, resins ...

** Plastics which, under the action of heat, harden gradually to reach an irreversible solid state.

The different uses of epoxy resin

Polyepoxides, or more commonly known as epoxies, are commonly used as adhesives or paints. Their chemical properties make them very useful especially in the field of construction. Indeed, once applied and cured, a polyepoxide film hardly reacts with its environment. It therefore acts as a completely watertight barrier. Once dry, it becomes rigid and retains the form it has been given.

Epoxy is a coating frequently used to cover concrete surfaces such as garage or shop floors. This type of resin is known for its durability, strength and flexibility. It is very resistant to shocks, scratches, abrasion and repetitive wear. In addition, its resistance to acids, bases, solvents and other chemicals is excellent.

All kinds of objects can be made from resins. We then speak of inclusions. They are made in the same way as a conventional epoxy, namely, incorporating together a more or less liquid resin and a hardener. The mixture becomes extremely hard and robust after only a few hours. The resins are initially transparent but they can be perfectly tinted (thanks to specific dyes). The pouring of resins allows to realize real works of art and unique objects!

In terms of customization, the possibilities are incredibly numerous and almost endless. Just add pigments of colors that can give rise to a color chart. However, the addition of mineral fillers and even all kinds of additives can influence the strength and properties of the resin.
